My Granddad brought his family to Brighton on summer day trips, to escape a drab post-war London. He found utopia in a pot of cockles, a deck chair and a bottle of light ale. I found a utopia of my own in a city with broad horizons, which is what inspired me to set up a studio here in 2010.

Cath Kidston has developed an iconic lifestyle brand that is described as ‘Contemporary Classic’. The brand philosophy ‘To Brighten Up Your Day’ encapsulates the brands vision to bring a smile through it’s own sense of Britishness. The brief was to re-engage with the CK audience (both young and old) demonstrating these values in the context of a British summertime. The catch? It was to be shot in the UK in mid-winter.
We created a slice of middle England in a film studio in West Acton. ‘Best In Show’ is set in the context of a village Summer Fete, focusing on the peculiar, but highly competitive practices of vegetable displaying and dog grooming. From a practical point of view the setting allows us to feature much of the CK product, with a classic village marque acting as backdrop to many of the shots. Creatively, the setting also allows us to establish a clear narrative through a cast of characters that reflect some of our British eccentricities. These candid studies are beautifully captured by photographer, Dean Chalkley. Welcome to Lower Camberley…
